You may sometimes need to remove the names of individuals, workplaces or orgnisations in your assessments in order to maintain confidentiality.

For instance, if a NHS Trust policy is only available to you on the Trust intranet (i.e. not freely accessible on the internet) then it is not available for public use. Therefore it can be referenced as:

  • NHS Trust (year) Title of policy. NHS Trust name withheld.

For example:

  • NHS Trust (2017) Falls risk assessment policy. NHS Trust name withheld.

If a Trust policy or organisational document is in the public domain (i.e. freely available to members of the public on the internet) then these can often just be referenced as a webpage in the usual way. However, students remain responsible for protecting the confidentiality of individuals and organisations, so you may still need to anonymise these if, by including them, you will breach confidentiality in some way.

There are further examples of ways you can anonymise information using terms such as 'Patient X' or 'Placement hospital' on Cite Them Right.
