We can give general guidance on the structure of your referencing, but we can't go through assignments or reference lists and provide detailed support. We cannot proofread your work.

Before you request we look at your referencing make sure you've checked the following:

In text

  • Are all your quotations in speech marks -‘single’ or “double”, depending on your referencing system? Be consistent.
  • Is your paraphrasing different in vocabulary and structure from the original?
  • Are all your quotes, paraphrasing and summaries referenced?
  • Have you accessed and read all the things you are citing?
  • Have you written the content yourself, and acknowledged any input from elsewhere?

Reference list

  • Is everything cited in your assignment listed once in your reference list?
  • Is everything in your reference list cited in your assignment?
  • Is everything in your reference list traceable?
  • Are all the references genuine?
  • Does the format and punctuation of the items in your reference list (or footnotes if your referencing style requires them) match the format and punctuation in the referencing guide for your subject
  • Is everything in the same font and justification?
For Harvard, APA and MHRA:
  • Is your reference list in alphabetical order, by surname/ corporate author? (footnotes should be in the order cited)

For OSCOLA bibliographies see the OSCOLA short guide. For Vancouver reference lists see the Vancouver short guide.
