Open Access (OA) is a publishing model that makes research available to readers at no cost. There are various different models within OA publishing:
- Gold OA: Work is made openly available at the point of publication. Authors are normally required to pay an article processing charge (APC).
- Diamond OA: Similar to gold but without an APC as the cost of OA has been subsidised.
- Green OA: Self-archiving in an institutional repository such as Worcester Research and Publications (WRaP). Free to do after any embargo period required by the publisher.
APCs vary by publisher and should be listed of their website. It is also possible to check this via Jisc’s Open Policy Finder. The average cost (excluding VAT) is currently around £1600.
Details around funding options for APCS and our Read and Publish Deals are available via the library website.
